2018 came out of nowhere! How fast the years have started flying by. No sooner has Christmas finished then it is time for Mum’s Birthday celebrations.
This year we decided to go for a birthday lunch to celebrate. Our destination this time was the Old Church Inn, Rattery.
Rattery is a small village about half an hour’s drive from Exeter. Mum and Dad had visited before, obviously impressed with the food they decided that this pub would be the best place for birthday lunching.
We arrived to an empty pub… Previously Mum & Dad had caught it on a busy occasion, people had even been seated on the stairs and the staff had created make-shift tables, so we were told. Not this time. Tables a plenty, spoilt for choice, however it did miss a hustly bustly atmosphere.
Part of the reason this pub was chosen was because it is dog friendly, Dusty was a lucky girl and was welcome to join in on the family celebrations this time.
We started off with a round of drinks and a huge glass full of pork scratchings!! I’ve actually never had these before… why, you ask? I just don’t know. They were delicious. I had no idea they were just dried pieces of pork crackling either?! Where have I been living all these years… and I call myself a Devon gal! The perfect salty snack to accompany drinks and get your appetite stirring.
For mains I decided on the pork belly, with mustard mash, seasonal veg and cider sauce. It was DELICIOUS. The portion was very generous (especially for lunch), as soon as I ate it I immediately felt that post-eat sleep coming on. The eye-lids got heavy!
Mum had a beautiful artichoke and watercress soup, and a side of scallops. These looked so tasty.
Dad chose a beetroot and goats cheese gnocchi, Tom went for a venison and chorizo burger and Benji also had the pork. All meals were superb, we will definitely be back for more.
